When collectors compare card grading services, they usually look at the price per card only – and overlook that shipping, insurance, value-based fees and turnaround easily double the total. This comparison does the maths: what does grading a card from Germany or the EU really cost – at PSA, CGC, Beckett and AP Grading? Every figure is dated (as of 28 July 2026) and sourced; where providers publish no prices, we say so openly.

Why the grading fee alone is misleading: 5 hidden cost blocks
- Outbound shipping: at every provider you ship at your own cost and risk – insured from approx. €7 via DHL.
- Return shipping: the biggest difference. CGC Munich charges €33.32 per return (1–5 cards), CGC UK even £38.40. At AP Grading the insured return is free from €89 order value – below that it is €6.99 (DE) / €15.99 (EU).
- Value limits & upcharges: PSA and CGC tiers only apply up to a maximum card value. If your card grades higher, upcharges apply (e.g. a €10–12 handling fee plus the tier difference at intermediaries). AP Grading uses a flat price without any value limit.
- Intermediary margins: German PSA intermediaries bundle submissions and price in margin, customs and logistics – which is why “PSA Regular” costs €105–113 here instead of US list prices.
- Customs & import VAT: submissions outside the EU (PSA USA, CGC UK) can trigger import VAT on the way back – a risk hardly any provider spells out. Grading inside Germany/the EU avoids it entirely.
PSA from Europe: the US route, intermediaries, and what Frankfurt does (not) change yet
PSA is the best-known grading brand with the largest resale reach – but from Europe it is also the most expensive route. Via German intermediaries the regular service costs €104.99 to €112.99 per card (as of 28 July 2026) at 30–60 business days. Cheaper bulk tiers (e.g. €30/card) exist but require minimum quantities and 140–160 working days – five to eight months. The new PSA facility in Frankfurt has accepted submissions from authorised dealers only since July 2026; consumer pricing for Europe has not been published. Booking “PSA from Germany” today still means booking intermediary prices.
CGC in Germany: fair tiers, expensive way back
Less known: CGC now grades TCG cards in Munich. The Economy tier costs €22.61 incl. VAT (max. card value €1,000, approx. 45 days), the Bulk tier €20.23 – but only from 25 cards and with a 75-day turnaround. The cost driver sits in the official return shipping form (effective 2 May 2026): €33.32 incl. VAT for 1–5 cards within Germany, €38.08 for most EU countries. For small submissions the return alone eats the price advantage several times over.
Graded in Europe: AP Grading and Beckett compared
Two providers grade TCG cards on European soil without the detour via the USA: AP Grading (€22.90 flat, ≤ 5 business days) and Beckett Europe in Lage (Base ~€19.95 per secondary sources, 45+ business days). On the list price Beckett looks a touch cheaper – but the fee is documented only through secondary sources, shipping rates are not published, and the turnaround is roughly nine times longer. The lowest headline price therefore does not decide on its own: what counts is the total including shipping, the insurance cover (AP: insured return shipping) and whether the price stays independent of the card’s value.

From which card value is grading worth it? The break-even rule
Rule of thumb: grading pays off economically when the expected uplift of the graded card is at least twice the total cost per card. Example: at 4 cards for €91.60 the total cost is ~€23/card – graded, the card should realistically sell for €45–50 more than raw. The lower your total cost per card (shipping!), the earlier grading pays off – and the smaller the risk for cards in the €30–100 range that make up most collections. Because it is charged per shipment and can exceed the card fee for small submissions: €33.32 return shipping on two cards adds more than €16 per card. Bundling several cards – or choosing a provider with free return shipping above an order value – lowers the total cost per card the most.
